GPU Compatibility List (H.264/AVC)

Sat Jan 16, 2010 8:20 pm

Dear All!

Mirillis Team is determined to make Splash compatible with most of the GPUs on the market. Now we need your help to collect information about compatibility of Splash with different hardware configurations (mostly GPU types). This is the first of several surveys that will follow in the future (MPEG-2, VC-1 etc.).

Please post your Graphics Card/GPU vendor, model and OS on which you are running Splash if you can select hardware acceleration and it works properly. If you can enable hardware acceleration but problems occur during playback let us know about them.

Please post your results using the template below.

COMPUTER: DESKTOP/LAPTOP/NETBOOK
GPU VENDOR: <GPU vendor>
GPU MODEL: <GPU model + amout of VRAM if possible>
OS: <OS>

Thank you!

COMPUTER: NETBOOK
GPU VENDOR: nVidia
GPU MODEL: ION
OS: Windows 7

I am not sure about amount of VRAM - ION uses it's own + DDR3 RAM (so dxdiag shows 1391MB)... But since it plays High@L5.0 I think it has 256Mb.
P.s. originally it was ION LE, but there is no difference in hardware between LE and not-LE so it's possible to "convert" LE to non-LE...

Hi. I've tested Splash on 3 machines. Here are my results:
COMPUTER: DESKTOP
GPU VENDOR: ATI
GPU MODEL: Radeon HD 2600 XT 256 MB GDDR4
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64

Everything is working good. CPU utilization only 0-2%. GPU utilization 5%. Looks good, but if I click pause, CPU and GPU utilizations stays the same. Not that it's big problem, but this gives greater power consumption.

COMPUTER: DESKTOP
GPU VENDOR: Intel
GPU MODEL: G31/G33 8 MB Shared
OS: Windows XP SP3

Force video overlay is checked and disabled. CPU utilization 5-23%.

COMPUTER: LAPTOP
GPU VENDOR: Sis
GPU MODEL: M650 64 MB Shared
OS: Windows XP SP3

The player starts, but when I try to play the movie:

Code: Select all

---------------------------
DISPLAY ERROR [DDraw]
---------------------------
Failed to create overlay surface!
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------
Ghost: We have not tested Splash with sis chipsets, you can try to update drivers but this graphics chipset probably does not meet Splash requirements.

Also, if I press "i" while not playing anything:

Code: Select all

---------------------------
Visual Studio Just-In-Time Debugger
---------------------------
An unhandled win32 exception occurred in SplashLite.exe [3976]. Just-In-Time debugging this exception failed with the following error: No installed debugger has Just-In-Time debugging enabled. In Visual Studio, Just-In-Time debugging can be enabled from Tools/Options/Debugging/Just-In-Time.

Check the documentation index for 'Just-in-time debugging, errors' for more information.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------
Ghost: Thanks for reporting, this should be fixed in next Lite version.

All test made with Splash 1.2. Video file info:

I have the same problem with "Visual Studio Just-In-Time Debugger" and I'm looking forward to next version and new Splash Pro. It’s the best video player for my laptop with GMA 4500MHD (GS45). Splash video hardware acceleration is perfect. Much better than DXVA in MPC Home Cinema. Good job!

both pc im posting the GPU info on are running windows 7 pro 64 bit

Here are the two

Intel G31/G33 express GPU acceleration dose not work
Ghost: G31/G33 chipset supports only MPEG-2 accelration and it will be avialable in Splash PRO.

ATI Radeon HD 4600 rv730 GPU acceleration dose work
DGMurdockIII: actually it dose work

This one works with the H.264 hardware acceleration:

COMPUTER: LAPTOP (HP with AMD Athlon X2 dual core QL-62 2.0 GHz)
GPU VENDOR: ATI
GPU MODEL: Radeon HD 3200 w/ 700 MB
OS: XP SP3

As a new camcorder owner, I went through multiple viewers until I found Splash, which is head and shoulders above anything I've found. A big thank you to the Mirillis team! I'm looking forward to the release of the camcorder version.

I am also trying to update a different older machine with a GPU that can take advantage of the H.264 hardware acceleration. Unfortunately, it only has a AGP interface, and not PCI-e. I've noticed on an NVIDIA site that a GPU can have the same model number, yet different specs depending upon the interface (limited in the AGP cases). Is your list only applicable to PCI-e interfaces? and if so, has anyone gotten the H.264 hardware acceleration to work with Splash through an AGP interface? If so, please offer recommendations. Thanks.
