AMD/ATI cards HW support for encoding?

Mon Aug 15, 2011 10:32 am

I see that version 1.11 still doesn't support AMD/ATI videocards for export videos, playing only. I have old NV 8600 GT and when a use it, I can see that Splash Pro Ex support CUDA for encoding. After buying HD6770 Splash Pro Ex has found HW acceleration for playing, but on Export page HW encoding checkbox is gray. Is that normal? Other sofware can use HW acceleration for encoding on this card. I use lastest drivers from amd.com.

Splash doesn't support ATI Stream for video encoding - only Intel Quick Sync and NVIDIA CUDA.

Acer Aspire TimelineX 3830TG (Intel i5-2410M, nVidia GT540M, Windows 7 x64)
PS Vita, Nokia N8

Yes, AMD/ATI acceleration for encoding is not supported yet.
Only video decoding acceleration can be used during exporting process.
This can reduce exporting time even twice but thats not encoding acceleration.

AMD will totally bypass CPU unlike Nvidia and increases the encoding time.
Correct me if I'm wrong :?

And in some cases HW decoding can increase encoding time.
E.g. I just tried: source 1080p, profile - nokia N8, fast 640x360. Bitrate 0.994. Without HW decoding 02:04, with - 02:23.
That is because GPU decoding is bottleneck. GPU's are slow in video decoding (e.g. ffdshow decodes that video at 369.7 fps, while GPU at ~45 fps and that would be limit for encoding). So if you want to encode video in low resolution using fast profile while having really fast CPU - you should disable HW decoding...
