24p motion stutter (only with hardware acceleration!)

Tue Jul 12, 2011 11:59 am

Since a year I've been an intensive user of Splash. All this time the following problem exists:
- play 24p movie
- use hardware acceleration
- set PC's video output to 24Hz
The above combination will give terrible stutter. This has been tested on several ATI and nVidia cards.

However when you use Mirillis' software decoder, everything plays perfectly smooth!

My current setup is to set the PC's video output to 60Hz. Then the hardware acceleration works. I let my Panasonic TV do the motion interpolation. My CPU can't handle Motion2.

While the 60Hz setup gives acceptable results, you're at the mercy of the motion interpolation (in my case the TV's). To play back a movie as true as possible to the original, sometimes 24p without motion interpolation would be nice.

I'm puzzled why this gets broken by hardware acceleration...

Please check the latest 1.10 version as it introduces support for HDTV 24Hz mode.

I'm sorry to say that with this version the stutter remains. And when using the software decoder motion is smooth. I use an nVidia GT440 graphics card.

To test, I've switched off motion compensation on the TV. Then you can see a repeating cycle of a few seconds smooth video followed by a few seconds jerky video.

What is your multidisplay setup?
DO you use Tv as extended desktop, clone or do you use only 1 display at a time? Please make also check if this problem occurs with all Picture2 enhancements disabled.

I can confirm that even with 1.11 stutter...and even with all the Picture2 settings disabled. :-(

speaking of stuttering, am also encountering this on my htpc(laptop) in any level of motion2, btw here's the specs of my laptop, i5-2410M, NVidia GT540M 2gig CUDA, 6gig RAM, Win7 Ultimate 64bit, i dont know if my specs is not quite enough for motion2 or i really need a desktop PC... :)
