Wouldn't it be easier if we have a common test file before showing screenshots? And also, to make sure that we are on the same page, we can take Joco1114's cue, enumerate the CPU usages according to the settings used, for example, posting a screenshot of the Task Manager performance tab and then a screenshot of the Playback Options in Splash Pro. I don't really use the CPU meter gadget of vista/7, it's just so slow in indicating CPU usage, honestly.

@insect0001:

i guess alot of the technology out there right now is Nvidia friendly, if gaming was my main concern i would def. go ati, however for 720/1080 mkv file playback or HTPC applications, Nvidia with CUDA is the way to go, seems to be supported in a lot of different areas. a cheap Nvidia card, I would suggest a 512mb card is the way to go.

I own a MSI 8400 512mb fanless PCI x16 card, been very happy with it.

nah, i wouldn't let go of my 4770 for an 8400, and you guessed wrong with what you said. i don't think splash pro or other (multimedia) is more "friendly" to nvidia cards, except of course for some softwares which are specifically marketed as such (e.g., CoreAVC, ). back to splash pro, there was nothing in the specs of this software or in the change log that mentions anything about favoring nvidia cards. maybe we just didn't agree as to what settings are we comparing with. definitely with motion2, detail and light boost, and best quality enabled, CPU usage would hit the roof.

Environment: nVidia GTX460SO, C2D 6750, 4GB DDR2800
Movie: big_buck_bunny_1080p_h264.mov

Splash Lite:
* CPU utilization: 1-2%
* memory: about 70 MB
* quality: 5/10

Splash Pro:
* CPU utilization: 60-80% (with iMotion 10, Detail Boost 5, Light Boost 5)
* memory: about 310 MB
* quality: 9/10

Splash Pro:
* CPU utilization: 1-2% (without iMotion, Detail Boost, and Light Boost)
* memory: about 102 MB
* quality: 5/10

Daum PotPlayer 1.5.25819
* CPU utilization: 2-3% (with my own settings)
* memory: about 98 MB
* quality: 8/10

And the winner is: Daum PotPlayer :lol:

what is "quality"?
Btw, cpu load on video with really high bitrate:
Desktop (Intel i7-970, ATI 5870, Windows 7 x64)
Acer Aspire TimelineX 3830TG (Intel i5-2410M, nVidia GT540M, Windows 7 x64)
PS Vita, Nokia N8

with the following parameters:

Big Foot , I would have expected better for a quad core . I see you're on XP . Traditionally old opsys's were faster . However Win 7 may be more efficient at using quad cores . Also your graphic card's driver will be almost surely much more updated under Win 7 than XP . What card is it , by the way ? Also Win 7 may interface better to it than XP .
Have you ever considered upgrading to Win 7 ?

Joco1114 - on my laptop , I can't really use Motion on these large movies .
I'd be interested to know what difference you see , if any , between Motion 1 , 5 and 10 .
I tried the Potplayer , but the movie just goes very slowly .
How would you rate the PotPlayer result , re the Motion thing ?
