Color depth Problem (SOLVED)

Thu Jul 28, 2011 12:37 am

Hello!

Im currently testing Splash Pro. The Motion² Feature is quite nice and so is the reliability of the Player to playback all Formats/File sizes that I use.

I do however have a Problem with the Color depth (Dont know if this is the correct term, my english isn't that good).

To see what I mean, here are two comparison Screenshots from VLC Player and Splash Pro (trial) from the Avatar 1080p trailer:

VLC:
Image

Splash Pro:
Image

This Effect is extremely strong when the image is fading-out or fading-in and is amplified when turning on the light boost Feature. It looks a little bit like the color depth is limited to 16bit. Until a recent patch for VLC I had the same Problem there (I think it had something to do with VLC being incompatible to x64 Systems or so). Is this Problem known and is there some way to fix it?

I toyed around a little bit more; the effect seems to be related to the quality of the source material - when playing the same scene from the Avatar Blu-Ray with Splash Pro the Effect is gone. So I guess its related to bad Encoding. It would however be nice if mirillis could look into it, as the Effect isn't that strong with VLC - even while the source material hasen't such a high quality.

This is probably connected with color range (16-235 and 0-255).
For the comparisons please do not use LightBoost as it changes colors.
Splash uses wide range 0-255 and we do not plan to include an option for reduced range 16-235 in the near future but it included in our plans for future versions.

Do you expereince this only with Motion2 enabled?

Yes, the Problem persists with Motion² disabled. But as I said it can be reduced when turning Light boost off.

LB works much better for lighter movie scenes.
When watching dark scenes movies it is the best to set very low LB or disable it.
